Supporting the Next Generation of Portable SCIFs

The Department of Defense is looking to make classified work more accessible to a broader segment of the defense industrial base, and portable SCIFs are expected to play a role in that effort.

According to Federal News Network, the Pentagon plans to develop and deploy approximately 50 mobile Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) and related information systems across the United States.

The initiative is intended to address a challenge facing many small businesses and non-traditional defense contractors: gaining access to accredited facilities where classified work can take place.

Building a permanent classified facility can require significant time and investment. Portable and modular secure facilities offer another approach, allowing secure workspaces to be deployed where they’re needed while giving more companies an opportunity to participate in classified defense programs.

PSS is familiar with this concept.

Secure Doors for Modular and Portable SCIFs

PSS has experience working with manufacturers and partners building modular SCIFs, shipping container SCIFs, and other portable shielded enclosures.

In some cases, these structures have been delivered directly to our warehouse so our team could install PSS STC/RF door systems into the enclosure before the completed structure continued to its final destination.

These projects present different considerations than installing a door in a traditional permanent building. The opening has to become part of a larger secure enclosure while maintaining the performance requirements expected of the completed space.

That’s where experience with both specialty doors and secure-facility requirements becomes important.

PSS provides STC and RF-rated door systems designed for environments where sound attenuation, RF shielding, physical security, and other requirements must work together as part of the complete opening.

Expanding Access to Classified Work

The Pentagon’s portable SCIF initiative is ultimately about more than the facilities themselves.

By increasing access to accredited classified spaces, DoD hopes to allow more defense suppliers to participate in classified development, collaborate with government teams, and compete for classified work.

Portable SCIFs could help remove one infrastructure barrier preventing smaller and non-traditional companies from contributing to those programs.

If demand for these facilities increases, the companies manufacturing modular SCIFs and shielded enclosures will need a supply chain capable of supporting that growth.

That includes specialized doors and openings that protect those spaces.

Experience That Already Exists

The Pentagon’s announcement may bring greater attention to portable classified facilities, but modular secure environments are not a new application for PSS.

We’ve already worked alongside companies building these structures. We’ve installed our door systems into portable shipping container SCIFs and other shielded enclosures. And we understand that the opening isn’t simply another component added at the end of the project — it’s part of the security performance of the complete enclosure.

As DoD looks to establish its initial fleet of mobile SCIFs and potentially expand portable SCIF production in the future, PSS stands ready to support the manufacturers, contractors, and government organizations doing that work.

Whether the secure space is constructed inside a permanent facility or delivered as a portable enclosure, our role remains the same: provide the specialized opening needed to help protect what’s inside.
