What are “Radio Frequencies” and what is the importance of RF energy?

Radio frequencies are electrical currents that pulse at different speeds, measured in Hz. The RF range spans from 3 kHz to 300 GHz, encompassing more than AM/FM radio frequencies (300 kHz to 300 MHz). Government regulations control specific uses at each frequency. As computer technology advances, more intentional and unintentional signals are generated. Correspondingly, these vital RF energy signals emanated by standard workplace equipment can be easily interpreted, reconstructed, monitored, and can radiate as electromagnetic waves.

Internal and External

The US government recognizes the threat of RF energy from equipment in offices and facilities and is taking action to protect their resources. RF waves can carry information long distances, so security measures are crucial to prevent RF leaks. RF energy issues work multiple ways: external signals can interfere with sensitive equipment, directed energy can be used for eavesdropping, and high levels can harm humans. To mitigate risks, companies often survey potential locations before constructing facilities for sensitive information processing.

RF Testing on Facilities

In conclusion, RF tests are generally performed for two reasons: to assess a barrier’s ability to attenuate RF energy and to determine the ambient levels that exist in an area. The goal of the tests performed was to determine the attenuation or shielding effectiveness of this area or facility and to determine if the metallic penetrations and cable egress points are a source and pathway for unintended signals to exit/enter the area. These tests, conducted in the field, employ specialized equipment to generate and measure signals at specific frequencies and power levels, ensuring accurate observation and recording.
